Weekly Challenges

Students are being challenged to test their engineering skills to build to their imaginations content.

Challenges are designed using a few simple materials and fewer rules

Create the tallest tower possible

Towers need to be Free standing (maybe attached to table)

towers should be able to support one marshmallow on the top.

Here's the materials you'll need to work with:

20 pieces of spaghetti 1 meter of tape maximum of 15 -marshmallows .

Remember to save a marshmallow for the top of your tower

Time Limit: None

Challenge # 1 "Towers are Falling"

Can you build a stable structure using index cards?
• The criteria:
structure must be as tall as possible
 freestanding
Tower should be able to hold a small toy or other objects such as a bag of 10 pennies)
 Materials
Maximum of 25 index cards

1 meter of tape,

Time Limit - None

This challenge is all about thinking outside the box -

Can you envision a tower made of something without flat sides,

something ROUND?

Towers need to be free standing (HINT: towers can be attached to table)

Here's the materials you'll need to work with:

2 meters of tape maximum of  10 balloons max .

Time Limit: None

Step 1 Mix 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup glue

Step 2 Now’s the time to add color, glitter, or confetti-( Never can add to much color, glitter or confetti ) mix it right in with the glue/water mixture

STEP 3: Pour in 1/4 cup of liquid starch and stir well

What do you notice ?

Is the mixture pulling off the walls and forming into a gooey blob of slime?

STEP 4: Start kneading your slime! with your hands it might be a liottle stringy at first but just work it around with your hands and you will notice the consistency change

YOU WILL NEED

2 cups plain flour (all purpose)
• 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (baby oil and coconut oil work too)
• 1/2 cup salt
• 2 tablespoons cream of tartar (optional)
• 1 to 1.5 cups warm water (adding in increments until it feels just right)
• Food Color (optional)

• Mix the flour, salt, cream of tartar and oil in a large mixing bowl
• Add food color to the water then into the dry ingredients
• Stir continuously until it becomes a sticky, combined dough• • Take it out of the bowl and knead it vigorously for a couple of minutes until clay is no longer sticky * This is the most important part of the process, so keep at it until it’s the perfect consistency! *• If its still a little sticky, add a pinch more flour until just right

To save your clay just store in a plastic bag or air tight container

ENJOY !!
